Mentor: Thomas Tiley, Mechanical Engineer, Babcock
Yunus Yobas is using the opportunities provided through the Tamar Engineering Project to strengthen his academic performance, build professional confidence and explore future career pathways within the engineering sector.
Alongside his studies, Yunus has balanced the financial demands of university life with part-time employment. Receiving a Tamar Engineering Project award has helped reduce those pressures, allowing him to dedicate more time to his degree and future ambitions.
“My award has supported me in many ways” says Yunus. “I have been able to work fewer hours in my part-time job to help pay my tuition fees, which means I have more time available for my studies. This will have a positive impact on my grades.”
A key benefit of the scholarship has been access to an industry mentoring. Through the Tamar Engineering Project, Yunus was matched with Thomas Tiley, a Mechanical Engineer at Babcock, and is currently participating in the Babcock Mentoring Programme.
The mentoring experience has provided valuable insight into career development and recruitment processes within the engineering industry.
“I have had access to a mentor, and he has helped me significantly with understanding application processes,” Yunus explains. “I am now more confident attending networking events thanks to this scholarship.”
The combination of financial support and professional guidance has helped Yunus broaden his horizons and identify future opportunities to enhance his employability.
“In the future I would like to secure an industrial placement.”
Looking ahead, Yunus is considering a career in engineering and is excited by the possibilities available within the sector.
“I am considering pursuing a career in engineering, with companies such as Babcock being of particular interest.”

A big thank you

Yunus would like to express his gratitude to the donors whose support has made these opportunities possible:
“Your help is truly life-changing. It is like a domino effect; with financial support, many doors open.”
