Benjamin’s path to university was shaped by resilience and determination. Growing up in a family where finances were always tight, he knew early on that pursuing higher education in engineering would be a challenge. “I’ve always loved problem-solving and understanding how things work,” he explains. “But without support, I don’t think I’d be here today.”

The Tamar Engineering Project scholarship has lifted much of the pressure. “It’s given me the chance to focus properly on my studies, rather than constantly worrying about money,” he says. The funding has helped cover essential costs like travel and course materials, while also allowing him to step back from part-time work that once ate into his study time.
Academically, Benjamin has flourished. “The difference in my concentration and energy has been huge,” he says. “I’ve been able to dedicate more time to my projects and really engage with lectures.” His confidence has grown, too, particularly through the mentoring programme. “Having a mentor who’s already established in the industry has been amazing. They’ve given me advice on everything from job applications to how to build professional networks. It’s made me think more strategically about my career.”

Benjamin is also building a stronger connection to the University of Plymouth. “The scholarship has encouraged me to get more involved in events and societies, and to actually see the university as a place where I belong,” he says. “That sense of community really motivates me.”

Looking forward, Benjamin has clear ambitions. “I want to work in sustainable engineering and help develop technologies that make a real difference to the environment,” he explains. “Long term, I’d love to contribute to projects that tackle climate change and create a more sustainable future.”
To the donors who made his scholarship possible, Benjamin has a heartfelt message: “Thank you for believing in me. Your generosity means more than you know, it’s not just financial help, it’s an investment in my future. You’re giving students like me the chance to dream bigger.”
And to those considering supporting a scholarship, he adds: “Don’t underestimate the impact you can have. Even a single award can completely change the trajectory of someone’s life.”
