Halel Abdulrahman

After following in her family's history of studying at the University of Plymouth, Halel's childhood dreams have now come true

Halel's story

“After obtaining my Bachelor's degree from the University of Plymouth, I went on to do a Masters degree in Environmental Impact Assessment & Auditing at the University of East Anglia.

When I returned to Bahrain, I was offered a job in one of the country's leading aluminium industries called Midal Cables. I was Head of Environment, Quality, Health, Safety and Security for 18 months.

After that I set up the Environmental Consultancy as Bahrain’s first registered and approved environmental company; that was in May 2001.

In January 2012, I set up Reef Arabia, a company specialising in the design, manufacturing, supply and deployment of artificial reefs.
I am now working on setting up a third company focusing on ecotourism and educational environmental awareness (educational ecotours). I chose to set up an environmental consultancy as I enjoy and love working on different projects ranging from marine to terrestrial, to industrial, to infrastructure etc.

I enjoy the challenge of environmental issues and love meeting different clients, ranging from government officials to private developers.

Working with schools and educational institutions is very rewarding, especially as more and more people become aware of the difficulties facing the environment nowadays.”

Why Plymouth?

“I chose to study at the University of Plymouth as I have family in Devon; my mother is British.

I was also born in Plymouth while my father studied at Plymouth Polytechnic in the 1970s. I also wasn’t sure what I wanted to study until I saw the course in the University prospectus during a visit from representatives of UK universities to Bahrain in early 1994.

From a young age I was always interested in the environment and thought I would do environmental engineering, but when I saw what the Environmental Science course at the University of Plymouth was offering, I realised it was what I always wanted to do.”

“I wouldn’t do anything differently as every stage of my life taught me to do better next time… I chose the career I have always dreamed of having, and I am grateful.”

“I learnt a lot from using the University's library and doing research on projects. It was a rewarding and useful exercise throughout the three years of study.”

I recommend Plymouth

“I would suggest the Environmental Science course to anyone interested in having an environmental career. I love Devon and I would recommend anyone who had a choice to study in Plymouth to do so, of course depending on the type of degree they choose to take on. Even though I knew I wanted a career in the environmental field, the Environmental Science degree made me realise that consultancy was the area I was most interested in.”

“The course prepared me for the work I am now doing in the environmental consultancy field. It gave me an overall view and background to all the environmental issues this world is facing.

Being at the University also taught me to be positive and outgoing, and it especially gave me the courage and tips for public speaking which I do a lot as part of my career.”
