The Inyo Earthquake Fault in Mammoth Lakes California

Southern California is one of the most densely populated parts of North America but is also one of the most seismically active as it straddles the boundaries between the two of the world’s largest tectonic plates. Until very recently, many of the faults that can generate potentially devastating earthquakes and associated hazards (landslides, tsunamic) were unknown, hidden from sight at depth or out at sea.
In this free online webinar, we’ll explore the geological causes of the unique set of seismic hazards facing this region, and how scientists can understand them and use this knowledge to mitigate the impacts of future seismic events. Along the way, we’ll discover how this is changing our understanding of how plate tectonics work. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end.
This free event is open to all prospective and current undergraduate students, both UK-based and international.
