Senior Technician - Composites

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (Faculty of Science and Engineering)

About
I run the Composites Engineering Laboratory at the University of Plymouth.
I am also Faculty Advisor for University of Plymouth Racing and Manufacturing Working Group Lead for the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. I am a part of the Materials and Structures Research Group MAST, a leading research centre for durable materials and structures in applications covering sustainable energy, the marine environment and medical technology.
I trained as a sculptor at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, achieving a BA (Hons) Fine Art. It was during this time that I developed a passion for materials and processes.
Following art school, I completed a PGCE in Art & Design at Goldsmiths and went into teaching. I also achieved my MA Art & Design in Education at UCL.
Whilst teaching D&T (Design & Technology), I came across composite materials. I decided to experiment for myself, making some carbon fibre components. I was instantly hooked. I embarked on a phase of self-study and research, developing my understanding and practical abilities to a point where I was confident in my subject knowledge. This led me to where I am now.
My day-to-day work involves teaching Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology students to manufacture composite materials and components. I also work with world-renowned academics, innovative researchers and students studying Architecture, Civil Engineering and Robotics. The work I do involves a lot of creativity and ingenuity, which I love.
I am an expert in RIFT (Resin Infusion under Flexible Tooling) and operate our advanced composite plate saw, Aeroform / Roaches autoclave, JRD Bipel hydraulic press and various other composite manufacturing equipment. I work with a wide range of reinforcement fabrics and matrixes, as well as prepreg and mould making materials.
The Composites Engineering Lab is a fantastic facility and we welcome all enquiries about the space and resources that we offer. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me, or our principal contact for Composites Professor John Summerscales.
