About
I trained as a sculptor at UCA, where I achieved my BA Honours Fine Art. It was during this time that I developed a passion for materials. Following art school, I completed a PGCE at Goldsmiths, University of London and went straight into teaching. I also achieved my MA Art & Design in Education at UCL. I had a successful career in teaching and ended up as a Head of Design & Technology and Engineering, before moving into the Higher Education sector.
Today, I run the Composites Engineering Laboratory at the University of Plymouth, which is an advanced facility for teaching and research within composite materials. I am also a part of the MAST research group, which is a leading centre for durable materials and structures in applications covering sustainable energy, the marine environment and medical technology.
My role involves teaching Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology students to manufacture composite materials and components. I also work with leading academics in the composites field, as well as innovative researchers, expert technicians and students studying other subjects e.g. Architecture, Civil Engineering and Robotics.
The Composites Engineering Laboratory is a fantastic facility and we welcome all enquiries about the space and resources that we offer. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me, or our principal contact for Composites Professor John Summerscales.
