Teaching interests

My current areas of teaching include all aspects of animal behaviour and welfare as applied to the management of both farmed livestock and conservation of wild species. This involvement is at both undergraduate and postgraduate (taught Masters) level.

Staff serving as external examiners

2006-2009 School of Clinical Veterinary Science, University of Bristol: BSc Animal Welfare and Behaviour

2013-2017 Hartpury Faculty, University of West of England: Animal & Land Sciences subject & award examiner
2014-2018: Writtle College, University of Essex: Animal Sciences and Animal Management subject & award examiner

Research interests

Behaviour and welfare of captive animals: both farm livestock and those in captivity within zoos and wildlife parks

My particular interests have two foci:

1. The interactions between animals and their captive environment, and how those interactions affect their welfare.

2. A holistic approach to the issues associated with the transport of livestock from farm to abattoir. This includes considerations of both the effect of different journey structures on animal welfare and also the impact that the economics of meat marketing has on the marketing decisions made by livestock producers. This research has been carried out both in the United Kingdom and in Greece.
