About Claire

My research background and interests encompass marine ecology, in particular assessing human impacts on the marine environment, such as fishing and the development of offshore energy and impact mitigation. I have conducted research based at Bangor University, the University of Exeter and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, prior to joining the University of Plymouth in 2026.

My PhD focussed on the UK king scallop fishery in the English Channel. I worked closely with the fishing industry and government agencies to produce data relevant to the Marine Stewardship Council Accreditation, through working at sea, assessing scallop regional genetic connectivity and mapping inshore fishing effort, prior to the introduction of iVMS for that fleet sector. I have worked with Seafish UK to prduce a tool for the assessment of fishing gear penetration depths which has been widely incorporated into further research, and have investigated non-invasive video methods for monitoring scallop populations through the BLUEFISH project. More recently I have focussed on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of the development of the offshore wind industry.

I work at the science-policy-industry interface, and have established relationships with collegues in industry, UK SNCB's and regulatory bodies. Engagement actitvities include science-industry workshops, international conference and fisheries management meetings.
