Biography

Biography

I am one of the team of technical specialists at the Coxside Marine Station that facilitate the fieldwork afloat for a wide range of research and teaching purposes. My primary role is a skipper of the fleet of small commercial vessels that the University of Plymouth operate, this includes the safe navigation of the vessel, operating the vessel within the marine industry and University protocols and ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

The work of the vessels typically includes supporting the marine science, ocean exploration, and marine biology courses as well as the commercial diving activities and autonomous vehicles.

I have many years of experience working in the education sector and operating a range of vessels commercially within Plymouth and further afield.

Following my graduation from the University of Plymouth I worked in the marine industry for a local yacht charter company prior to undertaking my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of St Mark and St John. On completion of my PGCE, I began teaching Geography in a large secondary school before taking on the role of Head of Outdoor Education. This position involved being responsible for planning and delivering a wide range of outdoor and adventurous activities, both land and water based, as well as planning and delivering expeditions to a variety of locations.

Alongside my teaching career, I served as a volunteer with Plymouth Lifeboat Crew for over 20 years, gaining valuable experience in maritime search and rescue. This combination of my education and maritime experience mean that I am well placed for the role of skipper at the University of Plymouth.
