University launches Student Charter

A new landmark agreement signed today commits the expectations and responsibilities of the University of Plymouth, its students and the University of Plymouth Students’ Union (UPSU).

The University of Plymouth Student Charter was signed for the first time by Vice-Chancellor Professor Judith Petts CBE, Gina Connelly, University of Plymouth Students’ Union (UPSU) Chief Executive and incoming UPSU President Alex Doyle. The moment was marked with an event hosted by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education & Student Experience) Professor Julian Chaudhuri, and attended by University staff, members of the Board of Governors and UPSU officers, staff and Trustees.

The Charter, encompassing the key beliefs and shared principles of the University and UPSU, is a framework and reference to be reviewed and endorsed annually. It will be signed each year by the Vice-Chancellor, incoming UPSU President and UPSU Chief Executive, and formalises the culture of respect, empowerment and engagement already in existence between the two institutions and the student body.

The Charter commits not only the University and UPSU, but students as well to abide by a code of behaviour characterised by inclusiveness and tolerance, sustainability, openness and professionalism.

The Charter sets out what all three parties can expect, in return for agreeing to take certain actions. While the University promises to provide an environment that allows students to reach their full potential, students agree to actively engage with their learning and UPSU commits to working with the University to enhance and develop the student experience.

Professor Judith Petts CBE said: "With this agreement we are committing to our students exactly what they can expect of us, but also what we expect of them, as the custodians of their learning journey. The Students’ Union continues its vital role in facilitating that relationship, with this Charter offering those it represents new clarity as to its role and responsibilities. The Student Charter makes the relationship between University and Students’ Union even more cooperative and transparent. It is a significant statement of our intent to work as closely as possible with our student partners, to enhance the University experience for everyone.”
Alex Doyle, UPSU President commented: “I’m so proud to be signing our Student Charter on behalf of the student body. Our VP Education and outgoing President have worked hard over the past year, consulting with students across campus, to ensure that this Charter represents the inclusive and empowering University that we are. It is important that the student body and both institutions understand their value and contribution in creating the best possible student experience and the Student Charter is the key illustration of that commitment.”
Gina Connelly, UPSU Chief Executive added: “On behalf of the Students’ Union I am delighted to have been part of the development of our new Student Charter which outlines our strong commitment to work in partnership with both our Students and the University to provide a quality student experience that helps our students achieve personal and academic success. We believe that success is best achieved through working together in the spirit of true partnership, mutual respect and upholding our values and the Charter is our commitment to this.”
