International Women's Day event 2026 speakers

From travels across the world to changing lives on our doorstep, the University of Plymouth is celebrating the achievements of its women and championing progress for International Women’s Day.
The annual event saw four inspirational speakers outline their experiences on the theme of Rights, Justice, Action – and how we can all take action in our everyday lives to make a difference for women’s rights and inclusion.
  • Lyndsey Withers shared her background in agricultural science, navigating male-dominated environments, and her work volunteering with the NHS, the local community and supporting students in the Faculty of Health.
  • Rachel Brown talked about women in the philanthropy, and outlined the causes led by the University – including the Claire Chick Nursing Fund.
  • Karen Pilkington from Plymouth Octopus used her personal experiences and community connection role to highlight power balances, and how being aware of them and addressing them, is powerful in itself.
  • Ocean science and conservation student Tsian Deslandes outlined her journey to University, the role models who have inspired her, and her work to champion inclusion in ocean science.

International Women’s Day is a time for celebration but also reflection to ensure we are really promoting and empowering inclusion.

One of our event speakers said that access – being able to sit at the table – isn’t the same as inclusion – where you feel like you can speak, and that is a hugely powerful message.
The speakers and events we’ve had have been so insightful and I know have left an impression on everyone who attended.

Women's network Q&A with Vice-Chancellor
The Women’s Network also welcomed Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Davies, HR Director Rachael Nightingale and Professor Chris Bennewith, Chair of the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, for a Q&A session about women’s lived experiences and how the University is ensuring its policies, leadership and culture are inclusive and supportive.

Hearing more about the University’s focus on its People has been great, and we’re really grateful to our senior leadership for their time. We do so much when we move forward together, so here’s to everyone feeling inspired.
