Office for Students CEO meets Vice Chancellor and students

The University of Plymouth has welcomed Susan Lapworth, chief executive of the Office for Students (OfS), to its city centre campus.
She met with Vice Chancellor, Professor Judith Petts CBE, alongside senior colleagues and a group of students, on Friday 17 November.
Following a tour of some of the University’s facilities, Susan Lapworth said:

I enjoyed meeting with some impressive students at different stages of their academic journey at the University of Plymouth. I also met staff who talked about the importance of the University’s focus on supporting students through their courses and into their careers. I was particularly interested to see the teaching and research facilities in the Marine Building, and I mostly avoided sea sickness in the University’s ship simulator. It was helpful to learn that employers in the South West are in need of coastal engineering graduates – but that prospective students and their teachers may not know about this opportunity for a fascinating career. My visit to Plymouth is the latest in a series of interesting and rewarding visits to universities and colleges for OfS colleagues.

As the independent regulator of higher education in England, one of the OfS’ responsibilities is to evaluate universities through the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
The TEF gives an overall rating as well as two underpinning ratings – one for the student experience and one for student outcomes – across three ratings categories signifying increasing degrees of excellence from Bronze, through to Silver and Gold.
