Lee-Jane Giles, History student

Congratulations to Lee-Jane Giles who has won two prizes for her final year dissertation. She is the 2017 winner of the Devon History Society Undergraduate Dissertation Prize and the British Commission for Maritime History Undergraduate Dissertation Prize.

Lee-Jane’s dissertation entitled “All that you refuse to do is mutiny”: Contextualising the Marine mutiny at Plymouth, 1797 explored the little known 1797 marine mutiny in Plymouth. One judge described the dissertation as ‘astonishingly strong piece of work’. Lee-Jane is beginning a postgraduate ResM degree at the University of Plymouth on questions of masculinity in the marines in the 18th century.

This is the second year running that a final year history student from Plymouth has won the BCMH prize.
