Candidate application guidance: using AI

Explore our guidance on using AI to strengthen your job application, while understanding our emphasis on authentic experience and proven skills

We understand that many candidates use AI tools (such as ChatGPT or CV builders) to help with formatting, structure, or wording and we fully support anything that helps you present your experience clearly and confidently.
However, please remember that AI cannot replace your real-life experience. Our recruitment process is designed to look beyond polished content - we will be assessing your actual skills, impact, and potential. This means we will be looking for clear, specific examples at both the application and interview stages.

x Use AI responsibly

Make sure your content reflects your own voice, achievements, and career journey. AI-generated responses are generic, and we want to know more!

Make your application stand out

6 Tailor your application

  • Clearly align your experience with the requirements and responsibilities in the job description.
  • Use clear headings, concise bullet points, and strong action verbs.
  • Prioritise relevance over chronology — bring relevant experience to the top where appropriate.
  • Avoid jargon or overly technical language without context.

6 Write a focused supporting statement or covering letter

  • Explain why you are applying, how your skills fit, and why this organisation or role appeals to you.
  • Back up claims with specific examples and outcomes - avoid generic buzzwords.
  • Show that you understand and connect with the values or goals of our organisation.

6 Use the person specification as a checklist

  • Mirror the structure of the job criteria - if a role asks for stakeholder engagement experience, give an example.
  • Don’t assume knowledge: explain your role, your impact, and any measurable outcomes.
  • Highlight transferable skills if you’re changing sectors or functions.

6 Be authentic – not just polished

  • AI can help with structure or clarity – but we’re looking for your lived experience.
  • Generic, overly polished content won’t help if it lacks depth or specific detail.
  • Tell us what you did, how you worked with others, and what happened as a result.
