Making the Modern

Peninsula Arts and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery have joined forces to bring to the city the Making of the Modern, a year-long series of cultural events that explores the long lasting significance and impact of the 18th century.

From philosophy, science, politics, culture, trade and industry, this rich period of history was the catalyst for many profound changes that transformed Western society and whose legacy, from the Enlightenment onwards, continues to impact on our lives today.

The series takes inspiration from Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s magnificent Cottonian collection. Over the next year National Gallery curators, historians, filmmakers, artists and musicians will shine a spotlight on this transformative period of history, opening up archives and rediscovering and representing hidden histories, music and art from the period.
