Social Enterprise in action at Plymouth University

Start-up: Story Jug

Plymouth University’s acclaimed Formation Zone helped nurture a new social enterprise company which encourages people to express their feelings through storytelling. The Formation Zone on the city campus site – one of six in the South West supported by the University – provides a creative and supportive environment for start-up businesses, and has been ranked amongst the best business incubator services in the world, earning UKBI status. So when award-winning author Joanna Traynor started a social enterprise called Story Jug in 2012, she found the Formation Zone helped her greatly to get started.

Joanna said: “Plymouth University has been very supportive of me as I sought to start up a social enterprise company, as well as providing such a great atmosphere for me to work in.” Story Jug helps people use storytelling as a way to deal with issues and emotions. The young company runs services from therapeutic writing classes to online writing workshops. Joanna said: “Story Jug was never going to be a moneychurning exercise - I wanted to help people - so social enterprise was always going to be the right fit.”
