Analytical chemistry

During this placement you will gain experience in working in an ISO 9001 accredited laboratory. You will be shown how to calibrate analytical balances and automatic pipettes. You will then use these tools to prepare calibration standards for use with state of the art instrumentation such as ICP-OES and ICP-MS to determine the concentration of trace metallic analytes in various sample types. You will also gain experience in sample preparation, quality control, method validation and data handling.

This placement is based within our chemistry department. 

The types of activity you will be involved with are:

  • general assistance within the chemistry laboratories
  • use of instrumentation (i.e. FTIR – Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy)

For this placement you will be working alongside the technical staff for computing and robotics. The types of activity you could be involved in are:

  • network laboratory tasks

  • tool box maintenance; manufacturing and testing a small batch of BNC test leads.

During this placement you will have the opportunity to rotate around a number of areas of civil and mechanical engineering including: Computer Aided Design (CAD), innovative design, mechanical and construction materials, electron microscopy, destructive and non-destructive testing, composites laboratory, engineering workshop, coast test basins and flumes. Within these facilities students will experience: designing work pieces with CAD software; manufacturing models with laser cutters and 3D printers; manufacturing composites test pieces; preparation of material samples for testing; manufacture and assembly of models for testing; setting up and testing of models including instrumentation and data recording.

  • palaeoecology (the ecology of fossil animals and plants)

For this placement you will be joining the technical team within geology. The types of activities you will be involved with are: rock preparation - cutting, splitting, polishing; reorganising of sample storage; cataloguing materials; preparing material for teaching or outreach events; possibly might include a day or some time out testing geophysical field kit or collecting samples; sorting and analysing microfossils; using analytical equipment to determine geochemical/geological history.

You will be joining the technical teams at the Marine Station and Marine Biology and Ecology Research Centre. During this placement, you will receive a wide range of laboratory, field and boat work in addition to assisting with current research projects. You will be based on the University of Plymouth Campus and the University Marine Station, Coxide.

For this placement, you will be working with the biological sciences technical team at the University of Plymouth. You will be helping with a range of activities in biochemistry, microbiology, ecology and plant sciences. Activities may include analysing solutions, media preparation, horticultural work and the collection of invertebrate specimens. There will be elements of laboratory, office and fieldwork associated with this role.

For this placement you will be based in the food and nutrition unit. You will be required to perform basic laboratory maintenance and assist technical staff. There will be the opportunity to perform simple chemistry tasks, observe and assist more complicated procedures. 

Applicants may be asked to attend a short interview/telephone interview.
