The PCMD was formed as a joint college of the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, in partnership with the NHS. It was established in 2000 and ranked joint first for student satisfaction.

Key objectives were to increase research capacity and build further upon an already strong partnership with the NHS in the South West.
