This event is for University staff only.
The aim of this workshop is to help participants gain an understanding of unconscious (or implicit) bias and how it might impact on teaching and learning. Unconscious bias refers to the ways in which unconsciously-held, often stereotypical, beliefs may impact on our decision making in everyday life. These biases occur automatically as our brain makes quick judgements about people and situations based on our prior experiences and cultural environment. Unconscious bias has been widely explored in the literature, and there is growing research evidence which suggests that it may be responsible for some enduring inequalities in society. However, the potential implications of unconscious bias for teaching and learning have rarely been explicitly considered. The workshop will focus on areas in which unconscious bias may impact on teaching, and how we as individuals and as members of wider teams, can help to reduce the effects of unconscious bias and improve inclusivity at Plymouth.
Before attending the workshop, participants will be asked to complete at least one Implicit Association Test (see Harvard Implicit - https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/)
