This evening at the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club, former student at the School of Maritime Studies, Plymouth, Jessica Tyson will share her interest in the sea and the opportunities of being a professional mariner has given for a sea and shore based career.
Jessica who has the distinction of being a Master Mariner, commenced her training with BP Shipping at Plymouth in 1988. She completed her cadet training in 1992 and for the next six years served on crude oil tankers and liquefied gas carriers of the BP tanker fleet, rising to the rank of Chief Officer.
Jessica was at Plymouth at the end of cadet training which had been developed since World War 2 and finally was undertaken by the Institute of Marine Studies of Polytechnic South West (Plymouth University's previous incarnation).
Jessica's career since leaving BP Shipping has been wide ranging and has included employment with the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and the Waverley Steamship Company. In 2013 she joined C F Spencer & Co Ltd, Marine Consultant & Surveyor of Bridgwater as a cargo surveyor. She is an authorised pilot of the Port of Bridgwater.
Jessica will give an account of her experience of working at sea and the unexpected transition to continue a career in shore-based related activities.
She recently spoke at the joint Nautical Institute and Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) conference, ‘Women at the Helm’ held during the London and International Shipping Week. Lloyd’s List described that she ‘lay down the gauntlet about the need to educate the public on the importance of shipping to the global economy’.
Paul Wright, Visiting Fellow of the Plymouth University Marine Institute, who taught Jessica during her cadetship, expressed his delight at having Jessica return to Plymouth to talk of her career in the maritime sector – a sector which can provide an exciting and interesting career for both men and women.
