Making the Modern film series
Director Saul Dibb,
Cast: Keira Knightley, Hayley Atwell, Ralph Fiennes.
This film series is inspired by Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s permanent Cottonian Collection and a series of introductory talks will investigate aspects of the 18th Century through representations in cinema. Please check the Peninsula Arts website for all details of speakers and talks.
Based on Amanda Foreman’s bestselling biography of the scandalous 18th century Georgiana, The Duchess of Devonshire. The Duchess was beautiful, glamorous and adored by the public but behind the façade lay a fiercely intelligent, lonely woman stranded in a loveless marriage to the Duke, one of the richest men in England. Frustrated by the limitations imposed on her by her sex and class, she rebelled against convention and embarked on relationships with her friend Bess Foster and Charles Grey, the future Prime Minister.
Sumptuous, intimate and fascinating, this film gives us a delicious insight into the celebrity superstars of their day and a chance to draw parallels between them and the culture of modern celebrity.
Dr Jenny Graham, Associate Professor (Reader) in art history, Plymouth University, will introduce all films in this series and run question and answer sessions afterwards.
