Roosevelt Lecture: "We Ain’t Trash No More"
Save event

Professor Cornelius Van Minnen, Roosevelt Study Center

In 1938 President Franklin D Roosevelt declared the South "the Nation's No 1 economic problem."

By the end of the 20th century, this situation had dramatically changed and the region had emerged, according to the New York Times in 1994, as a "dominant economic, political and cultural force in American life." New York Times journalist Peter Applebome by that time aptly noted, "to understand America, it is necessary to make sense of the South."

This lecture will focus on the changing perception of the South in the American press from the 1970s to the present.

Time: 18:30.

Price: £6.50, concessions £4.50.

Location: Upper Lecture Theatre, Sherwell Centre, Plymouth University.
