Held in the picturesque Barbican old harbour, the annual Sutton Harbour Plymouth Classic Boat Rally presents a display of classic motor and sail boats over four days as well as shore side events, a Parade of Sail and racing in Plymouth Sound.
Up to 75 vessels enter the rally each year which have ranged from Dunkirk Little Ships and lifeboats to historic sail fishing boats and new build traditional design sail boats. These can be viewed by the public alongside the pontoons over the weekend or from the Hoe on Sunday while the Parade of Sail and racing take place in the Sound.
Among the feature boats is the Tectona, a 80.75ft gaff rigged ketch built in India in 1929 and managed by the Island Trust as a youth sail training ship. The Tectona was the sail training ketch between 1964 and 1980 for the then School of Navigation (which later evolved into Plymouth University). She was used to give seagoing experience to students, under the guidance of (by today's standards very highly qualified) senior staff.
The list of participating boats and further information about the event can be viewed via the Classic Boat Rally website link above.
