Sustainability in Higher Education Conference

Save event

The UN’s recently launched Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide Higher Education (HE) with a renewed mandate for public engagement and a timely opportunity to look back at what has been achieved in sustainability education and explore and consider its future direction in HE.

This conference is the third in a national series, developed in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, that aims to bring together, showcase, and celebrate achievements in sustainability related: teaching and learning; Continuing Professional Development (CPD); pedagogic research; curriculum development; learning space design; and whole institutional change.

We welcome abstracts for research paper and interactive poster presentations (200 words maximum), on the themes shown below.  While we particularly welcome submissions that address the indicative questions included here, we also invite broader abstracts that align with the overarching themes of the conference.

  • ESD pedagogy for compassionate change

What are the teaching and learning processes that enable students to (i) develop their own competencies as change leaders in the pursuit of more hopeful and sustainable futures and (ii) act collaboratively in ways that make a positive contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals?

  • Innovative learning spaces for sustainability education

What are the physical and social environments that provide opportunities for renewed forms of sustainability education to flourish?  How can approaches such as the ‘living lab’ and service learning be built upon so that all students have the opportunity to learn through activities which are inquiry-based, active, participatory, interdisciplinary, and experiential?

  • Towards the sustainable university

What are effective approaches for ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of institutional change, organisational learning, and staff CPD? How can we engage effectively with staff and with students as partners in co-creating the sustainable university?

Online Abstract Submission and Registration is now open, the deadline for abstract submission is 27 October 2017.

Please use the links above to register your attendance and/or submit an abstract.

Please note that while attending the conference is free (lunch and refreshments will be provided), delegates will be responsible for paying for their own travel and accommodation.

If you have any queries please email the Centre for Sustainable Futures Lead at the University of Plymouth (paul.warwick@plymouth.ac.uk).
