Students Volunteering Week 2018 takes place from 19-25 February with the aim of bringing together individuals and organisations across the UK to celebrate the achievements and impact of student volunteers in their local communities while also encouraging and inspiring more students to volunteer.

Here at UPSU we have been busy planning and organising a number of events which will be taking place during Student Volunteering week and they are open to all University of Plymouth students - we can't wait for you all to get involved!

Micro Volunteering Fair

Monday 19 February, 11:00-15:00 (location: Illusion, SU)

UPSU are excited to share with you a small taster of the amazing volunteering opportunities we have available to you at this event! We know as students time isn't always on your side and trying to fit volunteering into your busy schedule isn't always possible. Come and discover how you can make a big impact in your local community in as little as 30 seconds!!

Award Nomination Writing Drop In

Monday 19 February, 15:00-16:30 (location: Illusion, SU)

Drop by and discover how you can make your Volunteering Award nominations stand out from the rest! Whether you are stuck on what to write, are unsure about the nomination process or just want to pick up a few pointers UPSU's Volunteer team will be here to help. The Volunteering Celebration Evening will be highlighting the incredible contribution and successes of our student volunteers on 9 May!

RAG Pizza Eating Contest

Monday 19 February, 20:00-22:30 (location: Sublime, SU)

Our legendary pizza eating contest is back! Bring your flatmates along to try out for the title of the University Pizza Eating Champions (or just come for a cheap dinner!)!! Teams of three - only £9 per team to enter! 

Gazebo on Campus

Tuesday 20 February, 11:00-15:00 (location: SU Roof)

Find the Student Volunteering Team on the SU Roof to chat about all things volunteering! Whether you have a specific question about volunteering, logging hours, current opportunities or would just like to find out more, we will be there to help!

SLV Animal Conservation* 

Wednesday 21 February, 09:00-17:00 (location: Ashburton - transport provided)

Do you want to escape the city for a day and spend a few hours in the countryside? For our first trip of the year, Student Led Volunteering are teaming up with the Barn Owl Trust to plan an exciting free day for University students.

SLV Green Team - Tree Planting*

Wednesday 21 February, 13:00-18:00 (location: Dartmoor - transport provided)

Join the SLV Green Team and Moor Trees for a spot of tree planting. The team are meeting in The Hive within the SU at 13:00 so please be prompt to enable us to have enough time to get to site and do as much as we can! We will be bringing tea, biscuits and cake so all you need to bring is a can-do attitude!

SLV Special Olympics*

Wednesday 21 February, 17:30-20:00 (location: YMCA Kitto Centre - transport provided)

If you are interested in helping to provide adults with learning disabilities and/or disabilities the opportunity to participate and compete in sport with no ongoing commitment then this is the opportunity for you! Volunteering with Special Olympics helps to make a real and positive difference to the projects members so why not join us? We meet every Wednesday in The Hive and we have access to a free taxi which transports us to and from the YMCA club. 

Get Involved With Our Student Volunteer Groups

Thursday 22 February, 11:00-15:00 (location: Illusion, SU)

Have you been thinking about getting involved with RAG or Student Led Volunteering? This is the perfect opportunity to find out about the projects, learn how you can take part and chat to our leaders about their experiences. 

UPSU Community Volunteering and Representation Pop Up Awards

Friday 23 February, 11:30-12:30 (location: Illusion, UPSU)

Come along to celebrate some outstanding student contributions to volunteering. Julian Chaudhuri, Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Education and Student Experience at the University will present 100 and 200 hour community volunteering awards and student voice volunteering awards.

RAG Jailbreak 2018

Friday 23 - Sunday 25 February (10:00 send-off location: SU Roof)

The Plymouth RAG Jailbreak is back for 2018 and its going to be bigger and better than ever! Using none of your own money, how far could you get from Plymouth University in 36 hours? Taking part in teams of 2-4 you will hitch, plead and beg your way onto flights, trains and buses to get as far away as possible! With previous teams having made it as far as Amsterdam, Croatia and even Istanbul! This event costs £10 each to sign up, which includes a RAG t-shirt, collection buckets and some handy travel accessories. 

SLV Animal Conservation*

Saturday 24 February, 09:00-17:00 (location: Dartmoor Zoo - transport provided)

Do you want to escape the panda-monium for a day and spend a few hours in the countryside? For our next trip, Student Led Volunteering Animal Conservation are teaming up with Dartmoor Zoo to plan an exciting day of animal conservation for  University students! You can have fun doing conservation work, seeing the animals and meeting new people, and what’s better, it is 100% free!

SLV Green Team - Railway Gardening*

Saturday 24 February, 10:15-16:30 (location: Sandplace - transport provided)

You are invited to join the SLV Green Team at Sandplace to clean up the train station, through gardening and chopping down trees. The team are meeting outside the Nancy Astor Sports Centre at 10:15 to walk to the station. Travel is included as is tea and biscuits! Please bring lunch and a drink as there are very few facilities at the station itself. 

SLV Green Team - Natural England*

Sunday 25 February, 09:45-17:30 (location: Yarner Woods - transport provided)

Come and join the SLV Team at Yarner Woods as we continue our work on the habitats for the butterflies by doing scrub clearance of holly, birch and beech. Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before as all University students are welcome.
