Donya, a young Afghan who moved to Fremont, California after serving as a translator for the American Army, spends her days working at a fortune cookie factory and her nights battling her desire to rebuild her life and the guilt she carries. Tinged with Jarmuschian deadpan humour, this beautifully sensitive film has a breakout performance by real-life refugee Anaita Wali Zada.
Dr Wen-Yu Wu, Research Fellow, University of Plymouth, and Dr Hoayda Darkal, Research Fellow, University of Plymouth, work on the Routes to Wellness project and their introduction will explore the challenges experienced by refugees attempting to access mental health support, and the significance of peer support workers in current circumstances.
Dir. Babak Jalali, US, 2023, 88 mins, some subtitles. Cast. Anaita Wali Zada, Jeremy Allen White, Gregg Turkington.
