Acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica, where he finds a desolate, beautiful landscape, largely untouched by human hands, and a group of truly unique people who risk their lives to study it. Based at McMurdo Station, the United States' largest Antarctic research centre, Herzog explores the minds of the scientists willing to abandon civilisation and endure volatile conditions to learn more about the continent's wildlife and awe-inspiring natural wonders.
Encounters at the End of the World was a main inspiration when I prepared for filming Prosperous Mountain in the Arctic. Herzog portrays people who work in one of the most remote territories on earth, and how daily operations take place in this place. The film features an extraordinary place where extraordinary minds offer a rare insight into the essence of being. Herzog’s life-long oeuvre is an ongoing inspiration.” Heidi Morstang

Heidi Morstang: Field Observations

11 February – 8 April 2023
Selected works that are an observation of a fragile natural environment, and the increasing changes in the climate that has developed into a global emergency. Through photography and film, landscape is the principal line of inquiry with the attempt to see various ways humans intervene with and in it.
Heidi is Associate Professor in Photography at University of Plymouth.
