Save event

SoCool for Science is an annual event for Year 9 schoolchildren from local schools.

Each school brings a group of 12 children to the Peninsula Medical School to visit the labs and try out some basic lab techniques. They get to try extracting DNA (usually from bananas), learning how to culture cells for experiments in the laboratory and get to see how the fruit fly can be used to model and understand human disease. Students can also talk to scientists working on a big variety of projects.

This event is carried out over two days and involves many of the PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and labheads taking part in these events. Attendance is usually between 140 and 150 schoolchildren with their teachers over the two days.

The event is aimed in particular at those schools that may not usually have a high number of students going on to study science or consider science as a career.
