In this paper Dr Kathleen Quinlivan draws on the Deleuzo- Guattarian notion of the assemblage (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987) to experiment with the methodological affordances of such an approach. Drawing on data from an Australian and New Zealand research project designed to respond to religious and cultural difference in school-based sexuality education programmes (Rasmussen, Sanjakdar, Aspin, Allen & Quinlivan, 2011), she maps the embodied inter-relational forces, drives and affective intensities that are at work in what she calls a ‘getting it right’ assemblage both within the sexuality education classroom, and also in student focus groups undertaken with her as a researcher. Her experimentation in ‘thinking with Deleuze’ (Mazzei & Jackson, 2012) maps the relational, affective and materially entangled bodies, objects and feelings that characterise the 'getting it right’ assemblage both inside and outside the classroom. She explores what that assemblage produces, and its methodological affordances in engaging with cultural and religious diversities in school-based sexuality education.
Dr Kathleen Quinlivan researches sexuality education within and across a range of secondary school and informal educational sites. She is particularly interested in the conditions of transformational learning related to genders, sexualities and differences with young people. She is currently directing a New Zealand Aids Foundation research project exploring the role that gay straight alliances play as sites of learning within New Zealand secondary schools. She is a co-investigator on an Australian Research Council Grant (2011-12): Sexuality Education in Australia and New Zealand: Responding to Religious and Cultural Difference. She is also a co-investigator on a Teaching and Learning Research Initiative project exploring Shifting Conceptualisations of Knowledge and Learning in the New Zealand Curriculum in Initial and Preservice Teacher Education (2009-11).
