Beethoven – String Quartet, Op.59 no.1
Jonathan Dawe – String Quartet, world premiere, based on Beethoven sketches Op.135
Beethoven – String Quartet, Op.135
Ruisi Quartet:
- Alessandro Ruisi, violin
- Oliver Cave, violin
- Luba Tunnicliffe, viola
- Max Ruisi, cello
Musica Viva is delighted to welcome the Ruisi Quartet for this special concert and the concluding event in the Beethoven: Innovator festival.
This event builds on the insights gained earlier in the festival, such as the fundamental importance of Beethoven’s sketchbooks in which he worked assiduously and often obsessively on all manner of musical ideas.
The programme ties together pivotal elements of his creative processes and brings them – literally – into the present. It includes two Beethoven String Quartets – the mighty Op.59 no.1, and the last quartet Op.135 and a new work. The sketches for Op.135 are extensive, from them we have commissioned the internationally renowned composer Jonathan Dawe to develop a new string quartet. This piece not only shares a common thread with Beethoven’s Op.135, but explores new musical implications of the sketches themselves.
Join us for this fitting celebration of the extraordinary Beethoven String Quartets.
