The Schools Analyst Competition is a national competition run by the RSC’s Analytical Division for first year 6th form or equivalent.
The competition has two stages: regional heats and a national final, where up to 16 regional heat winners compete for the Challenge Shield and significant cash prizes for themselves and their schools.
At this regional heat for the South West, teams of three students will undertake some practical analytical exercises based on problems relevant to industrial or social needs. Most of the tasks will be linked to the A level curriculum using equipment and concepts familiar to the students such as spot tests and titrations. Some tasks will use techniques and equipment not available in most schools, such as spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography. It is designed to be both fun and educational.
