It is now widely recognised that the rail artery to the South West is a vital component to the economic life of Devon and Cornwall.
Over the last two winters, the line has been severed by flooding north of Exeter, landslips and, of course, the collapse of the famous sea wall at Dawlish in February 2014.
How did the railway industry manage during these disruptions? What challenges did the recovery involve? And, importantly, what lessons have been learned for the future and what measures are now to be put in place to maintain this vital railway link?
Speakers: David Crone (General Manager, First Great Western) and Mike Gallop (Director Route Asset Management, Network Rail).
- David Crone will describe the challenges of operating a train company whose artery was severed, but whose customers still needed to get through.
- Mike Gallop will talk of the complex engineering challenges involved in achieving lasting repairs to the line.
Both speakers will talk of their hopes and vision for the future. There will be ample time for questions.
