Basketball team Plymouth University Raiders and national charity Brain Tumour Research have entered into an exciting partnership to help raise awareness of much-needed funds to support world-leading research currently taking place at Plymouth University.
The team has agreed that collections for the charity can be made at all its home matches this season. The game between the Raiders and Durham Wildcats will be a Brain Tumour Research and Plymouth University special – look out for Foxy in his fetching Brain Tumour Research t-shirt! The UPSU Cheerleaders will also be entertaining the crowds and taking to the court to support the Raiders during the match.
The Brain Tumour Research charity funds research at four Centres of Excellence in the UK, including Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry. Scientists at the University are focusing investigations into this devastating disease, specifically on low-grade brain tumours. Their ground-breaking research is aimed at improving quality of life and survival rates for brain tumour patients, with the ultimate aim of finding a drug-based cure – at present the only options for treatment are surgery and/or radiotherapy.
The match crowd will learn all about the charity, the world class research that is happening in Plymouth and our ambition to raise £1 million a year for five years. In association with Santander, there will be opportunities to make donations to this worthwhile cause. Just £2,740 buys one day of research in the labs at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and once Plymouth Albion and Santander have achieved this amount they will have a plaque on the “Wall Of Hope” adjacent to the labs. The wall will be complete once we achieve our target of £1 million.
