Studying Me, Ourselves and Them: Auto/Biographical Approaches in Social Research will give you plenty of opportunity to explore such issues as:

  • The history of auto/biography in social theory and social research
  • Autobiography, biography and auto/biography and other related terms
  • Critiques of auto/biography
  • Values and challenges of auto/biography in social research
  • Ethical issues and auto/biography
  • Auto/biographical research and auto/biographical writing.

Designed to be of interest to researchers who have little or no previous experience of auto/biographical approaches, the course enables them to reflect on the practice of auto/biographical approaches for future research.  

The course will also be useful to experienced researchers working across a variety of settings including education, health, social work and social care professionals who are interested in gaining a critical understanding of the contribution of auto/biographical approaches in social research. The course format comprises short talks, discussions, presentations and practical writing exercises.

The course runs from 10am-5pm each day with first day registration at 9.45am.

Course Director: Professor Gayle Letherby.

The course is being delivered by Professor Gayle Letherby, BA (Hons), PhD, FAcSS. Gayle is an Honorary Professor (Sociology) in the School of Health Professions and Institute of Health and Community.

Gayle has over 25 years of teaching experience and has published extensively in the area of auto/biography. She utilises this approach in her own research, not least in the areas of reproductive and non/parental identity; working and learning in higher education and loss and bereavement. Examples from these areas, and others, will be discussed within the course. Recent relevant publications include Letherby, G. Scott, J. and Williams, M. (2013) Objectivity and Subjectivity in Social Research London: Sage; Letherby, G. (2014) He, Himself and I: Reflections on Inter/Connected Lives Oxford: Clio Press and Letherby, G. (2015) 'Bathwater, Babies and Other Losses: A Personal and Academic Story’ Mortality 20(1). 

Gayle is an active member of the British Sociological Association Auto/Biographical Study Group and the founder of the Plymouth University Auto/Biographical research cluster within the Centre for Methodological Innovation, Institute of Health and Community.
