Making the Modern Series

Thirty-eight of Angerstein's pictures from his Pall Mall collection were purchased by Lord Liverpool's government in 1824 to form the nucleus of the National Gallery.

Susanna’s lecture will draw on fresh research into this merchant/banker collection and show the various ways in which he promoted British painters as well as amassing a first rate collection of Old Masters.
