Save event

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry invite you to their annual International Women's Day event. This year the event is split into two parts and celebrates Rosa Bale (Plymouth's first female doctor and GP).

All are invited to both parts of the day, which promise to be inspiring and engaging.

International Women's Day 2019 event | 10:00-14:50, Main Hall, Plymouth campus

Join us for the event in the University Main Hall where there will be inspiring guest speakers, gender equality workshops and the Mayflower Chorus Choir. We welcome Professor Gayle Letherby and Philipp Grote as guest speakers, along with our dynamic soapbox speakers.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The naming of the Rosa Bale Lecture Theatre | 15:30-16:00 onward, John Bull Building, Plymouth Science Park

All are welcome to the naming of our John Bull Building lecture theatre in honour of Rosa Bale, Plymouth’s first female doctor and GP, which will take place following the International Women’s Day event on the main campus. It is very exciting to be naming the lecture theatre after an inspirational woman who committed to herself to community and to the disadvantage.

A bus will be provided for those wishing to travel from the main campus to the John Bull Building.

New blue plaque honours Plymouth’s first female doctor

A new blue plaque honouring a pioneering female medic was unveiled on the University campus in December 2018.

Dr Rosa Bale was born in Barnstaple in 1864. She became Plymouth’s first female doctor, and possibly the first one west of Bristol, in either 1895 or 1896, having qualified at the London School of Medicine for Women in 1892.
