The IMO World Maritime Day theme for 2017 is ‘Connecting Ships, Ports and People’.
The theme was agreed to ‘highlight the role that shipping and ports play in helping to create conditions for increased employment, prosperity and stability’. The port and maritime sectors can be wealth creators, both on land and at sea and include the blue economy which is a large and growing industrial sector’.
Plymouth as Britain’s Ocean City looks to the sea for its future in many ways. The IMO theme for 2017 is therefore very appropriate.
The celebration will take the form of three short presentations.
- Dr John Chudley CEng FIMarEST (Chudley Associates) will talk on
the topic of Oceansgate – Plymouth’s marine sector as a wealth creator.
- David Adkins, Lecturer at Plymouth
University’s Faculty of Business will
look at Maritime Clusters and their role in
developing a sustainable maritime industry.
- The third presentation will look at potential maritime opportunities in
the South West of England.
The evening meeting is supported by the Plymouth University Marine Institute and the local branches of the maritime professional bodies including The Nautical Institute, IMarEST and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.
This is the 10th year that the marine and maritime professional community has celebrated IMO’s World Maritime Day.
The event is FREE and a
warm welcome is extended to all. Doors open at 18:45 for 19:00 start.
