EPIC has invited OpenNotes to host an online event, to discuss all about their mission – and how we in Cornwall could benefit.

OpenNotes is an international movement committed to spreading the availability of open visit notes and transparent communication in health and care - and then studying the effects.

The visit notes can be used to describe meaningful descriptions and updates from video consultation, outpatients or in clinic appointment to share relevant information with all of those involved in an individual’s care.

OpenNotes, and EPIC, believe that providing easy access to notes can empower patients, families, and caregivers to feel more in control of their own health and care decisions, and work towards improving the quality and safety of care provided overall. OpenNotes does not sell software or other products, and provides free tools and resources that could help clinicians and health care systems share meaningful notes.

The session will include:

  • what is OpenNotes and what is the relevance of other’s experience for Cornwall and the South West
  • three case studies (one local, two global)
  • a group discussion on patient access to their records and patient portals.

Speakers include Catherine DesRoches and Charlotte Blease (Harvard Medical School, USA) and Maria Hägglund (Uppsala University Sweden).

The content of this session could be particularly useful for those involved in commissioning and policy making, as well as those working in health and care, patients themselves and local companies in the South West who are interested in in how best to integrate patient data into their innovations.
