This one day session is designed for new supervisors of research degree students and any supervisors wishing to refresh their knowledge. 

It includes a discussion of new national context and quality standards for research degrees. It provides participants with opportunities to discuss the expectations and experiences of supervisors and students. The session will also draw on case study material to illustrate issues frequently encountered during the supervisory process. 

Aims and objectives

The day's programme is designed to enable supervisors to become more aware of the changing nature and context of postgraduate research degrees and to reflect on their supervisory practice. 

During the session the following topics will be discussed:

  • An introduction to the Graduate School at Plymouth University
  • The changing nature of research degrees
  • Supervisory practice - student concerns
  • Supervisory practice – issues for supervisors 
  • Issues for supervisors - case study examples
  • The QAA code and supervision
  • Using the Research Student Log
  • Researcher development
  • Plymouth University procedures for research degrees 
  • Research degrees and Intellectual Property Rights.

About the Research Support Programme

The Research Support Programme is facilitated by the Research Support and Development team and is specifically designed to support research staff at varying stages of their career and projects. All sessions are available free of charge for research staff, early career academics and staff supporting researchers.
