Save event
On a flight home from holiday in 2010, a University senior leader had a chance conversation with a local eye care specialist, who questioned why – when the South West urgently needed eye care specialists – Plymouth didn’t offer an Optometry degree.
It took less than nine months from that original meeting for the Optometry course to be professionally approved, with the first students welcomed in 2011.
Fast forward to 2023 and the University's School of Health Professions is delighted to celebrate 12 years of Optometry at the University with two special events to mark the occasion.
  • During the day there will be a free hosted CPD event with up to 9 CPD points available.
  • Alumni and current students are then invited to attend a drinks reception in the evening to join us in celebrating the history and future of Optometry here in Plymouth, and to reminisce and take a peek at what we have in store.

If you're interested in attending this event, please email claire.gorman@plymouth.ac.uk for booking details.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Centre for Eyecare Excellence (CEE)

CEE, our eye care clinic provides a state-of-the-art teaching facility for undergraduate and postgraduate optometrists.
The centre is equipped with the latest instrumentation as well as optically trained and fully qualified staff. An important aspect of the training provided is the supervised clinics with members of the public that our students undertake, particularly in their final year. Our aim is to provide eye care services to the Plymouth community and beyond. CEE strives to acquire a variety of patients to help our students gain experience throughout their course.
CEE offers the following eye care services: low vision and dry eye clinics; eye examinations; spectacle dispensing; a contact lens clinic; paediatric clinics; a myopia management clinic; visual impairment assessments; colorimetry assessments; binocular vision assessments; specialist dry eye assessments, and specialist neuro-visual clinics.
Centre for Eyecare Excellence
CEE was officially opened on 23 April 2013 by Dr David Adams, Head of Optometry, Royal Eye Infirmary at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.
