Making the Modern film series
Director: Amma Asante
Dido Elizabeth Belle was the illegitimate daughter of a royal naval captain and an African slave, and was raised by her great uncle, Britain's Chief Justice. During the infamous Zong trial (where a slave ship dumped its cargo of 142 slaves in a bid for insurance money) Dido was determined to win justice through her uncle's work. Little could she know the huge impact she would have on the future of the British slave trade.
British director Amma Asante has been named one of Variety's Top Ten ‘Directors to Watch’ on the basis of this work, and she has made an astonishing true story come to vibrant life.
Dr Jenny Graham, associate professor in art history, Plymouth University, will introduce all films in this series and run question and answer sessions afterwards.
