Shipping noise is a major contributor to sound pollution at sea.

We don’t know how it impacts on marine life. Researchers at Plymouth University are currently investigating further.

Aquatic Traffic uses a shoal of scuba divers, two snorkelling sapiens, and a lone free diver to draw attention to this issue. The human actors in this live moving image piece, relayed directly from the University's underwater webcam will catch your attention and draw your attention to the underwater noise pollution in Plymouth Sound.

Aquatic Traffic is part of Plymouth Art Weekender (23-25 September 2016). As part of PAW, Laura Denning is also creating a sound piece for the Cremyll Ferry, and working with homeless people at George House on a short photographic project.

Plymouth Underwater Teaching Observatory (PLUTO) webcam

Plymouth University's PLUTO webcam streams live images from Plymouth Sound, providing a unique view into the underwater habitat in real time.

"Out of sight, out of mind is a perennial problem in marine conservation. The PLUTO project aims to engage people with marine life in Plymouth Sound special area of conservation by providing an ‘eye in the sea’, accessible to anyone." (Dr Nicholas Higgs, Deputy Director, Plymouth University Marine Institute).

Visit the PLUTO webcam page for more information and underwater footage highlights.
