A38 Merafield Road Bridge Replacement
  • Devonport Lecture Theatre, Portland Square Building, Plymouth University

Save event

This presentation will cover the design and construction features of the replacement Merafield Bridge over the A38.

The scheme will see the replacement of the existing structure, which was constructed in the 1960s and has been identified as being affected by concrete ‘cancer’. The new bridge is being constructed to the east of the existing structure. Once complete, Merafield Road (on Plymouth city’s highway network) will be realigned and traffic diverted to allow the demolition and removal of the existing structure.

The design for the new structure consists of a lattice work of steel beams supporting precast concrete deck units supported by in-situ abutments at both ends with a single intermediate supporting pier. The construction work includes some interesting temporary works and a requirement for several AIPs because of the safety implications of the planned works.
