Santander Mobility Awards and Scholarships

Santander Universities mobility awards and scholarships are open to University of Plymouth students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) and staff who wish to undertake a period of research, study or work based learning in any country within the Banco Santander network. The countries included in the network are:

Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Germany, Ghana, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, UAE, UK, Uruguay, or the USA.

The Mobility Award

  • A minimum of ten awards ranging from a minimum of £200 to a maximum value of £1,000.
  • Can be awarded for a variety of projects, including language exchange programmes, initiatives to promote volunteering and the development of employability skills.
The Scholarship

  • A minimum of two awards with a maximum value of £5000.
  • To be used to study / research at a partner institution within the Santander Universities network.
Where the panel believes that a proposal does not represent value for money yet wishes to partially support the activity, funding may be offered at a reduced level.

The principal criterion for the award of a grant in 2017/18 is that the proposed travel project will make a demonstrable and tangible contribution to the applicant’s studies, research or employability. Applicants must explain how the proposed travel will satisfy this requirement.

We welcome applications from students or staff for whom travel abroad would facilitate and augment existing extra-curricular learning initiatives or directly benefit their course.

Successful applicants will be required to write a short review or summary of their experiences abroad for publication within University and Santander materials.

University of Plymouth students both undergraduate and postgraduate and staff are eligible for these awards.

In the case of student applications, priority will be given to students;
  • from low participation neighbourhoods (identified via POLAR 3 methods).
  • who declare a disability.
  • from a BAME background.
  • vulnerable groups, e.g. care leavers, estranged students.
  • students must have obtained full student funding with Student Finance England / Student Finance Wales as per their circumstances.

Applicants must:

  • Write a clear application, demonstrating thorough research into their application for scholarship funding.
  • Include a clear breakdown of expected costs.
  • Describe how receiving the support would enhance their academic performance and future employability.

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate that the proposed mobility will benefit their course of study, employability or other extra-curricular learning initiatives being pursued.

Awards must be taken up within the 2017/18 academic year and travel must take place by 31 August 2018.

The value of the scholarship will be paid directly to the scholarship holder and can be used as a contribution towards the costs of travel, accommodation, subsistence or course attendance.

The University has a duty of care towards students and consequently will risk assess the proposed activity within the student’s application. In the event there is a risk to the student, e.g. travelling in a country where the Foreign and Commonwealth Office do not recommend travel due to safety concerns, the application may not be supported.
