Sporting Excellence Scholar: Matthew Cox

Sport: Windsurfing (wave and slalom)

Representative club: United Kingdom Windsurfing Association

Ultimate sporting goal: To compete at the PWA World Tour in both wave sailing and slalom.

Role model: Levi Silver, a professional water man (someone who lives on the water) from Hawaii. When Matt begun competing at the age of 14 he was motivated by the high level he achieved in various water sports through pure dedication.

Originally from Scotland, Matthew’s heart was set on relocating to Plymouth University to further his studies and realise his sporting dream.

"It’s the excellent training facilities the university offers access to such as an on-campus gym and strength and conditioning support, combined with the general atmosphere that the city has to offer"

"As the sea is on my doorstep if there are any waves or wind I am straight out on the water for as long as possible" says Matthew who trains in Plymouth with our sporting partners at the Mountbatten Centre, and previously taught one of our student union clubs, Windriders, there.

As a youngster, training hard to follow his sporting dream, Matthew experienced a severe setback from windsurfing in a dangerous area. After learning the hard way by fracturing his skull, Matthew is now aware of the importance of preparation and knowledge always remembering this valuable lesson and applying it to his sport and studies.

Motivated by his favourite quote by Robert Collier ‘success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in day out’, Matthew believes that he can always do more. Having recently placed second overall in the SWA (Student Windsurfing Association) he demonstrates his ethos through his engagement and commitment to our Student Union Clubs (including Windriders and Surf Life Saving). Embracing it right through to his academic studies on our BSc (Hons) Economics course.

As he prepares to enter and take home the 2015 UKWA National Slalom title, Matthew is also preparing himself for life after sport by using his expertise to support others as he develops his skills as a professional windsurf coach.
