Sporting Excellence Scholar: Kelcey Pillage

Name: Kelcey Pillage

Sport: Modern pentathlon

Representative level: Team GB

Together the city’s world-class coaching and facilities combined with the pure passion, determination and talent of Plymouth born, Kelcey Pillage, has resulted in her international success as a modern pentathlete.

Her greatest achievements so far include;

  • 2011 Olympic Hopes individual silver and team gold.
  • 2013 Youth A European Selection.
  • 2014 competing at the international exchange, finishing 6th individual and securing another team gold.
"It was being selected and competing at my first international competition that really had me hooked!"

Kelcey’s sporting talent was recognised at a young age at Pony Club Tetrathlon where she competed in four sports, she then chose to add fencing and take her sporting career to the next level.

"Studying at renowned sporting colleges, Plymouth High School for Girls and Plymouth College, enabled me to keep a good balance between my sport and studies – being around lots of great, inspirational athletes and supportive teachers and coaches really helped. The coaching available at Plymouth College with Plymouth University sporting colour Andy Hill unlocked the opportunity for me to make the transition from tetrathlon to modern pentathlon."

Always determined to move away from home, Kelcey was all set to go to the Centre of Excellence for Pentathlon. It was the draw of Plymouth University course FDSC Strength and Conditioning, paired with support from tutor and training coach Charlie Legg, of City College Plymouth, that helped Kelcey recognise the network of support available here in Plymouth.

"When I realised how good the training and University course was compared to elsewhere, teamed together with a fantastic scholarship programme, it was a no-brainer for me to further my sporting career and academic pathway here in Plymouth."

A bubbly, enthusiastic and inspirational figure, Kelcey works hard to support fellow students and in 2015 she takes on the role of captain of the UPSU fencing club, developing her own international sporting and academic endeavours alongside.
