Sophie Minnican - Swimming

Course: BSc (Hons) Business Management

After 15 years of swimming, Sophie made her university choice not only on her choice of course but the great pool facilities and coaching expertise. 

After years of balancing study and sport she was delighted to reach her greatest achievement yet. 15 hours of swimming a week takes up a lot of time but she managed to forucs on lectures, deadlines, exams and even fit other sports into the mix.

Jason Carr - Basketball

Course: FdSc Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching

Jason was picked to play for the Irish national team in the Under 16 European Championships in 2011 and upon moving to Plymouth in 2012, he began to play for the Plymouth Raiders. He won their player of the year in 2014 whilst studying for a Plymouth University accredited degree with the support of a Sporting Excellence Scholarship. 

Jason aims to reach the highest place within the Plymouth Raiders BBL team and hopefully progress further in the future and the scholarship has helped him towards this goal.

Edward Mitchell - Underwater Hockey

Course: BSc (Hons) Psychology

Ed started playing underwater hockey at a very young age. Supported by his father who has been playing the sport since it first became a sport, Ed has managed to compete all over the world in different competitions including competing in Hungary for the U19's GB team.

During his time at university he helped captain the underwater team to their 5th consecutive national competition victory and hopes to carry on the tradition of winning this year.

Carlotta Molfese - Basketball

Course: MSc Sustainable Environmental Management

Born in Naples, Southern Italy, Carlotta started playing basketball at school from the age of 12 and she played in several teams all over Italy and in Europe, including Norway and the UK. At 16 her team came 2nd in the Italian second division. 

Carlotta undertook did her undergraduate degree at Plymouth University and subsequently her masters. She continues to play basketball for the Exeter Eagles.

Omar El Tahry - Squash

Course: BSc (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

Born in Cairo, Egypt Omar has played squash at a professional level from a very young age. His greatest achievements include taking gold in the Egyptian squash league, winning the Spanish Junior Open in 2013 and the BUCS Individuals B Grade and Conference Cup in 2015. 

He continues to play, compete and improve his performance with Plymouth University support for both his academic studies and sport, and Omar’s secret to success is to “never give up and to believe in yourself to achieve your goals”.

Dominic Kristy - Ju Jitsu

Course: BSc (Hons) Nutrition, Health and Exercise

Dominic is a multi-gold medallist in the National MA Championships and a multi-gold medalist in the Regional MA Championships in 2015. During his time as a Sporting Excellence Scholar Dominic was dedicated to both his sport and his studies. He has combined his two passions and, whilst still studying, has developed his own business in prehistoric health, an online platform which teaches people how to eat well. He was shortlisted in the University’s Formation Zone Business Challenge in 2015/16.

Oliver Wright - Triathlon

Course: BEng Mechanical Engineering

Oliver only started competing in Triathlon at the age of 19, but racing in the British Sprint Triathlon Championships inspired him to push himself to progress further. Subsequently he came 5th overall in 2014 and 9th Overall in 2015. 

His goal is to achieve top three in the Championships and his secret to success is: “Enjoy what you’re doing; work hard and success will follow.”

Kelcey Pillage - Modern Pentathlon

Course: Fdsc Sports Therapy and Injury Rehabilitation

Plymouth Born Kelcey has had international success as a modern pentathlete. Recognised as a young talent, she competed in four sports and added fencing to take her sporting career to the next level.

Having competed in the Olympic Hopes, Youth A European Selection and the Internation Exchange she is well acostomed to high level competitions and hopes to reach the Olympics.
