Sporting Excellence Scholar: Issa Mohamed

Sport: Swimming (100m freestyle and butterfly)

Course: LLB (Hons) Law

Representative club: Plymouth Leander

Ultimate sporting goal: To medal at Rio Olympics 2016

Dr Eric Thompson, also known as the hip hop preacher, is Issa’s role model:

"I used to listen to his speeches and it motivated me to become who I am, and that no matter where you come from, you are worth it"

Competing at the commonwealth games was a very eye opening experience for our scholar and reaching the semi-finals was one of Issa’s greatest achievements to date.

"When you want to succeed as much as you want to breathe, then you will be successful" Eric Thomas, American Football Player

Issa was given the opportunity to further his sporting endeavours here with us, whilst being truly under pressure, holding Kenyan national records and following in the footsteps of his father to pursue his dream. Up to now Issa has only impressed, achieving outstanding academic results and qualifying for the FINA World Championships in Russia in July 2015, along with the All African Games in August, which takes place every four years. Issa has also been awarded the ‘Swimmer of the Year’ award by the Kenya Swimming Federation.

"I have achieved my personal best and broken some Kenyan national records."

Choosing Plymouth was not difficult when it came to selecting the institution which could best support Issa and his sporting ambitions. Initially completing a foundation degree in Law with our Plymouth University International College (PUIC) opened the path for him to begin an undergraduate degree in the same field whilst continuing with his sport.

Balancing academic work and sporting endeavours can be challenging but Issa always remembers:

"If there happens to be a clash, I give priority to my study. But I will always train hard and sleep with my books."

He feels constantly proud to represent Plymouth University wherever he is and embodies the Sporting Excellence ambassador role, spreading the word internationally.

Currently volunteering as a lifeguard, Issa is ready for his next elite competitions in Russia and Africa, and is keen to begin his undergraduate studies with us here.
