Sporting Excellence Scholar: Charlotte Notman

Scholar profile

Name: Charlotte Notman

Sport: Rugby

Training location: Plymouth Albion RFC, Brickfields

Coach: Plymouth Albion RFC players

Top goal: Ultimately to make it to the Olympic Games

Charlotte Notman’s outlook has proved to be her secret to success having represented the UK and Plymouth University at the 2014 World University Rugby Championships in Sao Joe dos Campos, Brazil.

"Playing against national teams, cross continental, in a highly intense two-day tournament, as well as in extreme temperatures, it was both physically and mentally demanding, but a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity to play for the UK."

Born and raised in Cornwall, Charlotte’s first encounter with rugby was at St. Columb Major Primary School when her talent was first recognised and her lifelong love affair with the sport began, pushing her main hobby – dance – to one side.

"I had my first experience of the sport at the age of ten when I played in a tag rugby team. The boys in my class were so impressed, they encouraged me to join the local rugby club, and since then I've been hooked!"

At the age of 17, Charlotte had the privilege of playing in the England U20 squad.

BA (Hons) Photography seems worlds away from the rugby field, but Charlotte has kept her hand in balancing a three year course at Plymouth University with playing Premiership rugby, and was part of the University’s 2014 Varsity-winning Women’s Rugby Team.

“I've gained a whole new love of rugby and found so much joy in the game with the Women’s Rugby team as it’s such a relaxed and easy-going team.”

Ever hopeful of an Olympic dream, Charlotte says she is proud of her achievements to date.
