At Plymouth University, we recognise that sporting excellence has the power to inspire and have a proven track record of helping our students realise their sporting and academic ambitions.

So whether you’re a sailor or swimmer, are into rugby or rowing, or indeed any other sport, if you have the aspiration we can help you achieve your goals.

Commonwealth Games beckons for University swimmers

Student athletes representing three countries will go for glory when the Games begin on 4 April. Four top swimmers are heading to Australia’s Gold Coast to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Jessica Jackson and Laura Stephens have been selected for Team England, while Denilson Da Costa will swim for Mozambique, and Issa Mohamed for Kenya.

Sporting Excellence Scholarships

As a University of Plymouth student training and competing at national level or higher in your sport, you may be eligible for up to £2,000 to support your sporting development.

Applications must be submitted by 1 May to be considered for the following academic year.

Previous Sporting Excellence Scholars

As current students they study a variety of courses and know exactly what it takes to be part of the sporting excellence scholarship scheme.

We work closely with our partner organisations to support Plymouth University Sporting Excellence scholars.

Jonathan Rhodes – Sport psychologist

Jonathan Rhodes is a chartered psychologist who, alongside studying for his PhD at University of Plymouth, works closely with our sporting partnerships and Sporting Excellence Scholars. 

Giving regular 1-2-1 and group psychology sessions to athletes within our Sporting Partnerships and our Sporting Excellence Scholars has allowed individuals to reach their goals as elite athletes.

Jonathan has also used his knowledge of sport psychology to help Sarah Piercy to break a world record with the Project Nevada.
