Developing a nature and outdoor learning-rich curriculum

The University of Plymouth Institute of Education and Devon Wildlife Trust are excited to announce the launch of this unique and innovative course designed to provide teaching staff the opportunity to progress their own learning while having a significant impact on curriculum development in their school setting.

Who is it for?

The course is designed for qualified teachers looking to further their knowledge of how to enrich curricula through the natural world and outdoor learning pedagogy.

What will I learn?

Course content includes:

  • Ecological principles and habitat management related to school grounds
  • Introduction to common species identification
  • Outdoor learning pedagogy and practice
  • Principles and examples of school curriculum development
  • Practical considerations such as risk assessment and behaviour management outdoors.

How is it taught?

All teaching will take place at a residential weekend with a minimum of two individual follow-up sessions per student during the course.

Outcomes

Practical application of learning and the production of a development plan for a school setting form the main part of the assessment for this course, benefiting both the individual teacher and the school where they are based.

Further study

30 Master’s credits are awarded for successful completion of this module, which can be added to other units available at the University of Plymouth to build towards an MA Education.

  • Weekend residential (24–26 Sep 2021)
